Biography

In her practice, the heritage of colonialism and, more generally, the question of domination are recurrent. It's a subject that the artist has mastered and carries in her flesh. Born in Normandie to a Haitian mother and a French father, she remembers a childhood that denied her dual culture and mixed race.
The artist considers Haiti to be a shock in itself, for the island is pure contradiction: poor and destitute, it is also resilient and courageous. According to Gaëlle Choisne, the country is both violently beautiful and, for some, sublimely violent. Haiti is a piece of fiction turned into reality. It was the first country in the world to gain independence, in an attempt to be a nation reconstituted by people from different parts of the world, from Africa to Poland. In these works, Gaëlle Choisne attempts to transcribe the natural forces embodied by the spiritual energies emanating from this land.
The Franco-Haitian artist likes to interweave intellectual and artistic disciplines. Song, music, sculpture, videos, debates and voodoo rites... Seven stages, seven moments to recall this tragic story and its links with contemporary times. "To mourn, you have to recognize what has been. France is still struggling to come to terms with colonization, despoilment and their consequences", explains Gaëlle Choisne.
